Birthday Letter

Everybody gets messages on their birthday. Almost nobody gets a letter. That gap is the entire opportunity.

The most memorable birthday letters tell the person something about themselves they cannot quite see — the effect they have on the people around them.

Let the age shape the letter. For a child, write down the things they will not remember about being this age. For a friend in their thirties, name what they have quietly got better at. For a parent, tell them something you understand now that you did not understand as a kid. A birthday letter that could have been sent to anyone of any age is the one that gets skimmed.

What to say in a birthday letter

  • 1Something they did this year that you are still thinking about.
  • 2The quality of theirs that other people underestimate.
  • 3What they were like this time last year, and what has changed since.
  • 4Something they once said to you that you have never forgotten.
  • 5A memory from the year that made you glad to know them.
  • 6One wish for their year ahead that is not generic.

One thing to skip: Avoid "hope you have a great day" as the whole message. Say what you actually think of them — a birthday is a rare licence to be sincere without explanation.

The difference one specific line makes

Same sentiment, two ways of saying it in a birthday letter.

Most people write

Happy birthday! Hope you have an amazing day, you absolutely deserve the best.

Write this instead

You are thirty-four today. This is the year you learned to say no to people, and I have watched you do it about six times, badly at first.

Why it works: A birthday message describes the day. A birthday letter describes the year. The second version tells somebody something about themselves they cannot see from inside their own life.

Three ways to open a birthday letter

The first line is the hard part. Steal one of these and fill in the brackets.

You are [age] today, which means it is [number] years since [thing you both remember].

Every year I say happy birthday. This year I want to say this instead.

Here is what I noticed about you in the last twelve months.

Questions people ask

What do you write in a birthday letter?

One specific memory from the past year, one thing you admire about them, and one wish for the year ahead. Three short paragraphs is enough.

What do I write for a milestone birthday?

Milestones tempt people into summing up a whole life. Resist it. Write about the year just gone in real detail, then give one sentence to what the next decade might hold. Specific always beats momentous.

Can I write a birthday letter for a child to read later?

Yes, and it is one of the best uses of scheduling there is. Write one every birthday and set it to open on their eighteenth. By then it is a stack of letters from a parent who was paying attention the whole time.

Can I schedule a birthday letter in advance?

Yes. Write it whenever you have the time and set it to open on their birthday — the link shows a countdown until then.

Ready to write your birthday letter?

Write it the night before and schedule it to unlock the moment they wake up, so it is the first thing they read rather than the fortieth.
