Graduation Messages & Card Wishes

What to write in a graduation card — 43 messages for high school and college graduates, from parents, grandparents, friends and teachers, plus a letter to schedule for graduation day.

A graduation card is one of the few things a graduate actually keeps. The diploma goes in a frame; the card from the person who drove them to every early class goes in a box they open again at thirty.

The best graduation messages do two things: they name something specific about how the graduate got here, and they say something believable about what comes next. Skip the generic “the world is your oyster” — say what you saw them do.

Most US high school and college graduations happen between May and June. Write your message early and you can schedule it to open on the morning of the ceremony.

What to say in a graduation letter

  • 1One specific thing you watched them do to get here — the late nights, the comeback, the project.
  • 2What you are proudest of that has nothing to do with grades.
  • 3A piece of advice you actually live by (one, not ten).
  • 4What you are excited to see them do next.
  • 5For a gift: what you hope it helps with.

One thing to skip: Avoid turning the card into a lecture about the real world. One line of advice is wisdom; ten is homework.

The difference one specific line makes

Same sentiment, two ways of saying it in a graduation letter.

Most people write

“Congratulations on your graduation! The future is bright!”

Write this instead

“Congratulations! I watched you retake calculus and finish with a B+ while working twenty hours a week. Whatever comes next, you already know how to do hard things.”

Why it works: Naming the actual struggle makes the pride believable — and it is the line they will reread.

Three ways to open a graduation letter

The first line is the hard part. Steal one of these and fill in the brackets.

“I still remember the night you almost quit [class] — and look at you now.”

“Before everyone else congratulates you, I want to tell you what I saw.”

“You did it, and you did it your way.”
