Letter to Grandparents

Grandparents keep everything. The drawing from when you were six, the school photo, the postcard you barely remember sending. A letter to grandma or grandpa joins that collection immediately — and unlike a phone call, it can be re-read on the quiet afternoons.

US National Grandparents Day falls on the first Sunday after Labor Day — 13 September in 2026 — while the UK keeps its own Grandparents Day on the first Sunday of October, which is 4 October in 2026. But this is one letter that needs no date at all. Whether you are nine or forty-nine, telling a grandparent what they gave you is never out of season.

Write more than you think is interesting. What you had for dinner, what your flat looks like, the name of the person you sit next to at work. Grandparents are usually the last to hear any of the ordinary detail, because everyone assumes they only want the headlines. They do not want the headlines. They want the Tuesday.

The American and British dates are three weeks apart and neither country tends to write for the other — worth knowing if your family is split across both, because it gives you two entirely legitimate excuses. Write once, then schedule the link to unlock on whichever morning applies.

What to say in a grandparents letter

  • 1A memory from their house — the smell of the kitchen, the routine, the thing you were always allowed to do there and nowhere else.
  • 2Something they taught you that you still use, even if they never called it teaching.
  • 3A story of theirs you want them to know you remember — and want to hear again.
  • 4A question about their life at the age you are now: the job, the town, the person they were seeing.
  • 5A habit of theirs you have clearly inherited, and whether you are pleased about it.
  • 6What your life looks like now, in real detail. Grandparents are starved for the ordinary specifics everyone else edits out.

One thing to skip: Avoid writing as though you are summing up their life. A letter that says "here is one Tuesday at your house I never forgot" lands far better than one that reads like a farewell.

The difference one specific line makes

Same sentiment, two ways of saying it in a grandparents letter.

Most people write

I hope you are keeping well. I think of you often and I hope to visit again soon.

Write this instead

Your kitchen had a tin with a cottage painted on it, and I was allowed to open it without asking. I have not been allowed to do that anywhere since.

Why it works: Letters to grandparents drift towards politeness. One piece of sensory detail from their house proves you kept something, and that is worth far more to them than an update on your news.

Three ways to open a grandparents letter

The first line is the hard part. Steal one of these and fill in the brackets.

I was in [place] last week and it smelled exactly like your kitchen.

I have a question I should have asked you years ago.

Do you remember [thing]? I still do, in detail.

Questions people ask

What should I write in a letter to my grandma?

Pick one memory from her house or her company and tell it in full detail — the room, the smell, what she said. Then tell her something true about your life right now. Those two things, memory and update, are exactly what a grandmother wants in a letter.

What do you write in a letter to grandpa?

Something he taught you and the moment you last used it, a story of his you remember, and a question that invites him to tell you another. Plain and specific beats sentimental — most grandfathers hear "I remember" more clearly than "I love you", though there is room for both.

When is Grandparents Day?

It depends where you are. In the United States, National Grandparents Day is the first Sunday after Labor Day — 13 September in 2026. In the UK it is the first Sunday of October, which is 4 October in 2026. Australia marks it on the last Sunday of October and Canada on the second Sunday of September. Write the letter early and schedule it to open on the morning of whichever date applies to you.

When is Grandparents Day in the UK?

UK Grandparents Day is the first Sunday of October — 4 October in 2026, and 3 October in 2027. It is a separate date from the American one in September, so if your family is split across both countries you have two perfectly good excuses to write, three weeks apart.

Should I post it or send it online?

Both, if you can. A printed letter is an object for the sideboard; a private link arrives today and can carry photographs of the great-grandchildren at full size. Many families send the link to a parent who sits and opens it with them.

Can grandparents open the letter easily?

Yes. They tap one private link and a sealed envelope opens with their name on it — no app to install, no account to create, and the text is large and readable.
