Kwanzaa Messages & Wishes

Kwanzaa runs from December 26, 2026 to January 1, 2027. Here are 30 Kwanzaa messages for family, friends and community — including one for each of the seven principles.

Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration of African American and Pan-African culture and heritage, created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966. Each of its seven days honours one of the Nguzo Saba, the seven principles: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.

Because every day has a principle, Kwanzaa is a natural time for messages that mean something — thanking someone who builds up the community, encouraging a young person’s purpose, or celebrating a family’s creativity.

Kwanzaa runs from December 26 to January 1 every year. Families light the kinara, one candle each night, and the festival ends with a karamu feast on December 31 and a day of reflection on January 1. A common greeting is “Habari gani?” (What is the news?), answered with the principle of the day.

What to say in a kwanzaa letter

  • 1The principle of the day, and how this person lives it.
  • 2Thanks for someone who strengthens your family or community.
  • 3A wish for unity, purpose and faith in the year ahead.
  • 4For young people: encouragement for their goals and creativity.
  • 5A memory of a karamu feast or family gathering.

One thing to skip: Avoid treating Kwanzaa as a replacement for Christmas or Hanukkah — many families celebrate it alongside other holidays. Keep the focus on its principles and on community.

The difference one specific line makes

Same sentiment, two ways of saying it in a kwanzaa letter.

Most people write

“Happy Kwanzaa!”

Write this instead

“Happy Kwanzaa! On the day of Ujima I keep thinking of you organising the food drive in October — that is collective work and responsibility in action.”

Why it works: Tying the message to a principle and a real action makes it specific to Kwanzaa and to the person.

Three ways to open a kwanzaa letter

The first line is the hard part. Steal one of these and fill in the brackets.

“Habari gani? Today the answer is Umoja — and I thought of you.”

“As we light the kinara this week, I wanted to say thank you.”

“This Kwanzaa I am celebrating the people who hold our community together, starting with you.”
