Proposal Letter

Most people can barely speak in the moment. A letter is the version of the proposal where you get to say everything properly, and the version they will still have long after the day blurs.

Write it to be read slowly, either just before you ask or just after. Answer the real question underneath the question: why them, and why now.

Decide in advance which of those two it is. Read before, and the letter does the work your voice will not manage. Handed over after, it becomes the thing they read on the sofa at midnight when the adrenaline has drained and they want to go through the entire day again. Both are right; not deciding is what leaves the letter folded in a jacket pocket.

What to say in a proposal letter

  • 1The moment you knew — not the day you decided to ask, the day you knew.
  • 2What kind of life you are picturing, described concretely.
  • 3What you thought marriage was before them, and what you think it is now.
  • 4One ordinary Tuesday from your future that you are looking forward to — not the wedding, the Tuesday.
  • 5What you promise to do when things are difficult, not when they are easy.
  • 6Why you are certain, in plain language.

One thing to skip: Avoid making it a list of their best qualities. A proposal letter is about a future, not a review.

The difference one specific line makes

Same sentiment, two ways of saying it in a proposal letter.

Most people write

You are my best friend and my soulmate and I want to spend the rest of my life with you.

Write this instead

I decided on a Sunday in February, in the kitchen, while you argued with your sister on the phone and mouthed sorry at me. That was the moment, not the ring shop.

Why it works: A proposal letter has to answer why them and why now. Naming the exact hour you knew answers both at once, and it is the one sentence in the letter nobody else could have written.

Three ways to open a proposal letter

The first line is the hard part. Steal one of these and fill in the brackets.

By the time you read this I will have asked you something, or I will be about to.

It was [when] — not the day I bought the ring, the day I knew.

I am writing this down because I know exactly how well I speak when it matters.

Questions people ask

Should I write a letter for my proposal?

It helps enormously if you get nervous speaking. Many people read the letter aloud, or hand it over and let the other person read it while they gather themselves.

How long should a proposal letter be?

Around 300 to 600 words — long enough to say why, short enough to be read in the moment without the emotion draining out of it.

Do I read it out loud or hand it over?

Handing it over is easier and usually better: it gives you both something to do with your hands and lets them read at their own pace. If you want to read it aloud, practise once on your own — the first read-through is where the crying happens.

Should the letter mention the ring or the plan?

Barely. The logistics are the least interesting part and they will find out within the minute. Spend every word you have on why them.
