Remembrance Day Messages & Letters
What to write for Remembrance Sunday (8 November 2026) and Armistice Day (11 November 2026): respectful messages, a letter to a serving or former soldier, and a letter to someone you have lost.
Remembrance Day is a day for quiet words rather than celebration. In the UK and across the Commonwealth, people wear poppies and fall silent at 11am on 11 November to remember those who died in the First World War and in conflicts since.
A Remembrance message does not need to be long or formal. A few honest lines — thanking those who served, remembering a relative by name, or writing to a serving member of the Armed Forces — are more fitting than borrowed poetry. If you do quote the Ode of Remembrance, follow it with something of your own.
In 2026, Remembrance Sunday is 8 November, with services and the National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph. Armistice Day, 11 November, falls on a Wednesday, with the two-minute silence at 11am.

- 2Thanks to those who served, and to their families who waited at home.
- 3For a serving soldier: that you are thinking of them, and something ordinary from home.
- 4For a veteran: thanks for their service and a wish for peace and health.
- 5What remembrance means to you, in your own words.
One thing to skip: Avoid jokes, emojis beyond a single poppy, and anything that turns the day into a political argument. Keep the focus on the people being remembered.
The difference one specific line makes
Same sentiment, two ways of saying it in a remembrance day letter.
Most people write
“Lest we forget.”
Write this instead
“Lest we forget — and especially Private Thomas Hale, my great-great-grandfather, who wrote home every week from Ypres and never came back to read the replies.”
Why it works: Naming one person turns a ritual phrase into an act of remembrance. It is the specific name that people remember.
Three ways to open a remembrance day letter
The first line is the hard part. Steal one of these and fill in the brackets.
“At eleven o’clock today I will be thinking of you.”
“I never met my great-grandfather, but every November I learn a little more about him.”
“Thank you for serving, and for everything you carried home with you.”
