Letter to a Sibling

A letter to your sister or brother — the one person who remembers your childhood from the inside.

A sibling is the only person who will ever have been there for the whole thing. Parents remember you as a child; friends met you already assembled. Your sister or brother watched the entire construction from the inside, including the parts you have since quietly edited out.

That shared history is exactly why the letter is hard to write. Siblings develop a dialect where affection is delivered as an insult, and stepping outside it for a page feels exposing. Do it anyway. The strangeness is temporary; the letter is not.

You do not need an occasion. National Sibling Day is 10 April, and it is a perfectly good excuse, but the letters that land hardest are the ones that arrive on no particular day at all — because nothing obliged you to write them.

What to say in a sibling letter

  • 1A memory from childhood that only the two of you have — bonus points if your parents remember it differently.
  • 2Something you have watched them do as an adult that genuinely impressed you.
  • 3A way they protected you, took the blame, or went first so you did not have to.
  • 4Something you have never apologised for and probably should.
  • 5A trait you have both inherited from the same place, and what you each did with it.
  • 6What you want the next twenty years of being siblings to look like, concretely.

One thing to skip: Avoid using the letter to relitigate who was the favourite. If there is an old grievance, name it once, honestly, and then get on with the affectionate part — a letter is a poor courtroom and an excellent olive branch.

The difference one specific line makes

Same sentiment, two ways of saying it in a sibling letter.

Most people write

You are the best sister anyone could ask for and I am so lucky to have you. Love you loads!

Write this instead

You told Mum it was you who broke the door in 1998. It was me. I have never corrected the record and I am not going to now, but I did want you to know I remember exactly what you did.

Why it works: Sibling affection said straight sounds borrowed, because it is the register you two never use. One specific, slightly incriminating shared memory does the same emotional work while still sounding like the pair of you.

Three ways to open a sibling letter

The first line is the hard part. Steal one of these and fill in the brackets.

There is exactly one other person alive who remembers this, and it is you.

We are not the kind of siblings who say this out loud, so I am writing it down instead.

I have been telling people the [event] story again, and I got to the end and realised I have never thanked you for it.

Questions people ask

What should I write in a letter to my sister?

Start with a memory only the two of you have — the more specific and the more disputed by your parents, the better. Then say one honest thing about who she has become, which is the part siblings almost never say out loud. Finish with something concrete you want to do together, so the letter ends in the present rather than the past.

What do I write in a letter to my brother?

Keep it in your normal register. Brothers who communicate mostly in insults and football do not suddenly want a sonnet — one real memory, one thing you admire stated plainly, and one line making clear you are in his corner permanently will do far more than an emotional escalation he has to respond to.

How do I write to a sibling I have grown apart from?

Do not open with the distance as an accusation. Name it as a fact ("we did not fall out, we just stopped being in the same rooms"), take your share of it, and then say the specific thing you miss about them rather than the general idea of having a sibling. Ask for one concrete thing — a date, a call — instead of a reconciliation.

When is National Sibling Day?

National Sibling Day is 10 April every year, mostly observed in the United States. It is a good prompt, but a sibling letter needs no date at all — arriving on an ordinary Tuesday is part of what makes it land.

What if we argue constantly?

Write it anyway, and keep it narrow. You are not obliged to resolve the whole relationship in one letter. One true, generous sentence about a person you argue with is worth more than a page of pretending you do not.

Write it on an ordinary day, not on Sibling Day. The fact that nothing prompted it is most of the point.
