Gratitude is easy to feel and strangely hard to deliver. Most of it gets compressed into "thanks so much!" and lost.
A thank-you letter is worth writing precisely because it is slower. It tells the person that what they did stayed with you long enough to be written down.
There is a version of this letter for almost everyone: the teacher who noticed something in you, the manager who took a risk, the friend who drove four hours without being asked, the nurse who was kind at 3am. What they have in common is that the person on the other end has no idea it stayed with you. That fact is the whole content of the letter.

What to say in a thank you letter
- 1The specific thing they did, described as though they might have forgotten it.
- 2What was going on for you at the time.
- 3What difference it actually made, then and since.
- 4The part you assume they have filed under "ordinary" — say it back to them in detail.
- 5Whether you have done the same for somebody else since, and what happened.
- 6Something you have carried forward because of them.
One thing to skip: Avoid making it about your inadequacy ("I could never repay you"). Keep the focus on what they did and what it changed.

“Thank you so much for everything you did. I really appreciate it more than you know.”
Write this instead
“You drove ninety minutes on a Wednesday to sit in a hospital corridor with me, and you brought a book so I would not feel watched.”
Why it works: Vague thanks leaves the recipient guessing what they are being thanked for. Naming the act — especially the small part they assumed nobody noticed — is what makes gratitude land.
